The year 1954 had a somewhat unpromising start for the railway and harbors, largely due to the after-effects of drought and famine in Tanganyika, the emergency conditions in Kenya, where terrorists made several attempts to sabotage the railway, and the political uncertainties in Uganda. However, by the middle of the year traffic showed a brighter trend, and the year final results were very little short of expectations.
