- In the January of 1959 King Baudoun of Congo announced that Belgium would lead Congo to independence “without delay but also without inconsiderable haste”. However from an article in The Economist of January 31,1959 stated; The promise of independence was made after riots whose immsediate cause waas an agitation for political change ,even if their deeper reason was economic distress.
