Since the establishment of the elders’courts in 1981, following an ammendment to the magistrates Jurisdiction Act, their power to arbitrate and determine land disputes has remained a source of criticism in legal circles to date. On a number of occasions there have been calls, mainly by legal experts, too the government to repeal the provision that empowers panels of elders to determine land disputes.
