During the past few months the biggest international news story has been the growing controversy over the planned deployment of new American nuclear missiles in western Europe. Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets of western European capitals to protest the planned deployment of American cruise and Pershing II missiles, the majority of the demonstrators are genuinely convinced that any further escalation in the arms race between the two superpowers is likely to lead to a global holocaust.
